PRODUCTION DESCRPTION

A potentiometer consists of a resistive element, a sliding contact (wiper) that moves along the element, makes good electrical contact with a portion of the element, electrical terminals on both ends of the element, and a means to move the wiper from one end to the other institution. And a housing that contains the filter element and wipers.

Many inexpensive potentiometers use a resistive element to make an arc, usually less than a full turn, and a tap (C) that slides over that element as it rotates to make electrical contact. Resistive elements can be flat or angled. Each end of the resistive element is connected to terminals (E, G) on the housing. The wiper is usually connected to the third terminal (F), between the other two terminals. On panel potentiometers, the wiper is usually the center terminal of three. For single-turn potentiometers, the wiper typically makes less than one revolution around the contact. The xxx entry point for contamination is the narrow space between the shaft and the axis of rotation.

Another type is the linear slider potentiometer, which has a tap that slides along the linear element without rotating. Contaminants can get anywhere along the slot the slider enters, making effective sealing more difficult and compromising long-term reliability. One advantage of the slider potentiometer is that the slider position provides a visual indication of its setting. While the setting of the rotary potentiometer can be seen by the location of the markings on the knob, the array of sliders can give the visual impression of the setting as on a graphic equalizer or fader on a mixing console.
