Overview

SS 904L pipes, also known as UNS N08904, are made up of a high amount of chromium, nickel and iron, which offer superior corrosion resistance, strength and toughness. It has low carbon content, copper and molybdenum, contributing to its excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.It's also well-suited for use in environments that require resistance to elevated temperatures and high levels of corrosion.

The high chromium content promotes and maintains a passive film which protects the material in many corrosive environments. 904L has a greater resistance to precipitation of ferrite and sigma phases on cooling and welding than other stainless steels containing molybdenum such as 316L and 317L. There is no risk of intercrystalline corrosion on cooling or welding due to the low carbon content. Its maximum service temperature is at 450°C.

Mechanical Properties

904L has good formability and weldability characteristics due to its low carbon content. It also offers good toughness and strength at both room temperature and elevated temperatures. Additionally, it exhibits excellent fatigue strength even after prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

This type of steel has good ductility and excellent machinability properties, which make it easy to work with when fabricating parts or components from this material. It also has excellent thermal expansion properties, making it suitable for cryogenic environments or high-temperature applications where thermal shock can occur.
