A buttweld fitting is a weldable pipe fitting that allows for change of direction of flow, to branch off, reduce pipe size or attach auxiliary equipment. Forged Steel buttweld fittings are manufactured in accordance with ANSI / ASME B16.9.

Butt weld fittings are available as elbows, tees, caps, reduces and out lets (olets). These fittings are the most common type of welded pipe fitting and are specified by nominal pipe size and pipe schedule. Buttweld fittings use seamless or welded pipe as the starting material and are formed (through multiple processes) to get the shape of elbows, tees and reducers etc. Just as the pipe is sold from Schedule 10 to Schedule 160, butt weld pipe fittings are sold the same way. Welded butt weld fittings are more common in stainless steel due to cost advantage. Sch 10 fittings are also more common in stainless steel butt weld fitting.

Most types of steel have a relatively low carbon content of about 0.05% to 0.3%. In comparison, carbon steel has a carbon content of up to 2.5%. Two-and-a-half percent carbon may sound insignificant, but it introduces several attractive benefits that aren’t found elsewhere.

They consist primarily of ferrite, which is a solid solution phase of carbon dissolved in alpha iron, a body-centered cubic crystal. Ferrite is the softest phase of steel and is largely responsible for the higher machinability of low carbon steel relative to other carbon and alloy steels. As the carbon content in steel increases, an increasing amount of perlite forms in the microstructure of the metal. Perlite is a microcomponent consisting of alternating layers of ferrite and iron carbide (cementite). Fortius, the machinability of medium carbon steels will be less than that of low carbon steels. High carbon steels with more than 0.8% carbon have a pearlitic matrix within a cementite network. The machinability of high carbon steels is low mainly due to the high perlite content and the hard, brittle cementite network.alloy steel
