Gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) is an important regulatory molecule, which is related to many physiological functions and pathological states of the human body. It is a gastrointestinal hormone, which is the homologous amphibian bombesin of mammals. It was originally isolated from the gastric mucosa of pigs and is widely distributed in the nervous system, gastrointestinal tract and respiratory tract of mammals. 1 With the dissociation of the signal peptide, its 148-amino acid preproprotein is further broken down to generate 27-amino acid gastrin-releasing peptide and 68-amino acid precursor gastrin-releasing peptide (ProGRP). Due to the short half-life of gastrin-releasing peptide, only 2 minutes, it is impossible to detect it in blood. An assay was therefore developed for the detection of progastrin-releasing peptide (31-98), a carboxy-terminal region commonly found in three types of human progastrin-releasing peptide splice variants. Serum progastrin-releasing peptide (31-98) has been shown to be a reliable marker for patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC).
