Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland, and the pituitary gland secretes thyroid-stimulating hormone. The inhibitory effects of the two antagonize each other, and they form the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis.

【Clinical significance】

Increased TSH:
It can be seen in primary hypothyroidism, thyroid hormone resistance syndrome, ectopic TSH syndrome, TSH-secreting tumor, application of dopamine antagonists and iodine-containing drugs, etc.
The earliest manifestation of primary hypothyroidism is elevated TSH, such as elevated TSH and normal T3, T4 may be subclinical hypothyroidism.
Umbilical cord blood, neonatal blood or amniotic fluid measurement of TSH (uTSH) at the 22nd week of pregnancy is helpful for the diagnosis of fetal or neonatal hypothyroidism.

TSH reduction:
It can be seen in hyperthyroidism, subclinical hyperthyroidism, PRL tumor, Cushing's disease, acromegaly, excessive use of glucocorticoids and antithyroid drugs.
