Description:

The electroscalpel converts electric energy by adapting currents through cutting and coagulation tips. The advantages of the electroscalpel are the minimizing of surgical hemorrhage and the prevention of the growth of undesirable cells by contact destruction. When applied to orthopedic surgery, the advantage of an electroscalpel is multifold.

First, tissues such as joint capsule and synovium are highly vascularized and tends to bleed easily especially in presence of inflammation and pathology (i.e., cranial cruciate ligament [CCL] rupture).

The electroscalpel can be used for cutting through tissue such as subcutaneous or fascial tissue, and to cauterize bleeding vessels. Maintaining a clean, bloodless surgical field is of utmost importance for optimizing the visualization of each anatomical structure, especially when performing arthrotomy.
