What is a diesel engine?
In a gasoline or diesel engine, the fuel burns inside the cylinders
themselves. Internal combustion wastes much less energy because the
heat doesn't have to flow from where it's produced into the
cylinder: everything happens in the same place. That's why internal
combustion engines are more efficient than external combustion
engines (they produce more energy from the same volume of fuel).
What does a diesel engine need to start?
The most common method for starting a diesel engine is through the
use of glow plugs. Like an air intake heater, the glow plugs
operate off of the power of the vehicle's battery. This pre-warming
process brings the air in the combustion chamber up to a
temperature conducive to cold starting.
Whereas a gas engine starts when the fuel is ignited by the spark
plug, diesel engines rely on the heat created by compression in the
chamber. Sometimes, such as during cold weather, the diesel fuel
needs the aid of an outside source of heat to reach the appropriate
temperature to start.

How is diesel engine work?

The air must be heated to a temperature greater than the
temperature at which the injected fuel can ignite. Fuel sprayed
into air that has a temperature higher than the “auto-ignition”
temperature of the fuel spontaneously reacts with the oxygen in the
air and burns. Air temperatures are typically in excess of 526 °C;
however, at engine start-up, supplemental heating of the cylinders
is sometimes employed, since the temperature of the air within the
cylinders is determined by both the engine’s compression ratio and
its current operating temperature. Diesel engines are sometimes
called compression-ignition engines because initiation of
combustion relies on air heated by compression rather than on an
electric spark.
