Water Temperature Sensor

A car water temperature sensor is used to measure the temperature of the liquid coolant in an automotive engine. It is typically installed in the engine block or cylinder head of the water jacket and is in direct contact with the coolant1. The sensor works by measuring the temperature given off by the thermostat and/or the coolant itself. The sensor is usually a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistor, which means its electrical resistance decreases when the temperature increases. The engine control module uses the information from the sensor to adjust the air-fuel mixture depending on the temperature.
