Ni-Cds use electrodes made from nickel oxide hydroxide, cadmium metal, and potassium hydroxide alkaline electrolyte.

During discharge, Ni-Cds convert chemical energy into electrical energy. During charging, Ni-Cds convert electrical energy back into chemical energy.
