What is ASTM 182 F316L

ASTM A182 F316L specifications include forged or rolled alloy steel and stainless steel pipe flanges, forged fittings and valves and parts for high temperature use. After hot working, forgings shall be cooled to a specific temperature prior to heat treatment, which shall be carried out in accordance with certain requirements such as type of heat treatment, austenitisation/dissolution temperature, cooling medium and quenching. The material shall conform to the chemical composition requirements for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, niobium and titanium. The material shall meet the mechanical property requirements of the grade ordered, such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, Brinell hardness. All grades H and F63 shall be tested for average grain size.

Socket welding is a pipe connection detail in which the pipe is inserted into a recessed area of a valve, joint or flange. Unlike butt weld fittings, socket weld fittings are mainly used for small diameter pipes (small diameter pipes); generally for pipes with a nominal diameter of NPS2 or smaller.

In order to connect pipes to valves and fittings or other parts of the pipeline, fillet type sealing welds are required. Socket weld construction is a good choice when high leak integrity and high structural strength are important design considerations.

Due to the use of fillet welds and abrupt joint geometry, the fatigue resistance is lower than that of butt weld construction, but still superior to most mechanical joining methods.
