How to use a Mask – World Health Organisation Guidelines

• 1. Before putting on a mask, clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
• 2. Cover mouth and nose with mask and make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask.
• 3. Avoid touching the mask while using it; if you do, clean your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
• 4. Replace the mask with a new one as soon as it is damp and do not re-use single-use masks.
• 5. To remove the mask: remove it from behind (do not touch the front of mask); discard immediately in a closed bin; clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

Tips To Test

1. Visual Test

If you cut open your mask, you should see a very obvious 3-layers. The 3 layers would typically consist of an outer hydrophobic non-woven layer (translucent), middle melt-blown layer (white), and an inner soft absorbent non-woven layer (green, blue, or white).

2. Water-resistant Test

The outer-most layer is designed to be waterproof. Pour some water onto the outer layer and you should be able to see that the mask repels water properly.

3. Non-flammability Test

The middle layer of a surgical mask is a melt-blown fabric, not made with paper, therefore, if you light it with a flame, it will not burn like paper. Instead, it melts without flame.
