Screw terminals are those that use screws as a method of securing cables or wires. It is more common for the screw to have a flat head, this type of terminal is usually used where the voltage and current requirements are moderate (home/commercial wiring). While the wires bound to the terminal blocks are not physically connected using solder, if done correctly they are very strong and can be used in a permanent setting. Extreme care should be taken when tightening the terminal blocks, as overtightening can damage the inserted cable and result in an unreliable and potentially dangerous connection.

Barrier terminals are very similar to screw terminals in that they use a screw as the mechanism for securing the cable. Barrier terminal blocks usually have multiple termination points for multiple cables, so the barriers between the individual terminals are small. Barrier terminals are also available with small covers and housings to further protect cables and are common in household wiring and other high voltage situations where protection from arcing or potential short circuits is required.

Push-fit terminals use small spring-loaded levers that allow cables to enter the terminal from one direction but not allow them to exit, effectively holding the wires in place; hence the name "push-fit".

Another problem with push-in terminals is that some are not designed for re-use and lack removal levers, making repairs difficult as the entire terminal may need to be replaced.
