ASTM A403 WP316L Pipe Fitting Specification

Standard specification for forged austenitic stainless steel pipe fittings

ASTM A403 WP316L covers the standard for forged austenitic stainless steel fittings for pressure piping applications. Fitting materials shall include forgings, rods, plates, or seamless or welded tubing. Forging or forming operations shall be performed by hammering, pressing, piercing, extruding, upsetting, rolling, bending, welding, machining, or a combination of two or more of these operations. All accessories should be heat treated.

Chemical and product analysis should be performed and chemical composition requirements for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, chromium, molybdenum and titanium should be met. Fitting materials should be tensile tested to determine tensile properties such as yield strength and tensile strength. Fittings supplied in accordance with this specification shall be visually inspected for surface discontinuities, surface defects, and mechanical marks.

Several grades of austenitic stainless steel alloys are included in this specification. Grades are designated with a prefix, based on the applicable ASTM/ASME or MSS standards. For each of the WP stainless grades, several classes of fittings are specified, to indicate whether seamless or welded construction was utilized.
