With its chromium-nickel base, Type 301 is an austenitic alloy applicable for a variety of uses. High corrosion and abrasion resistance, forming and drawing qualities, weldability, strength and ductility make Type 301 a highly marketable product. It is hardened only by cold working, not by heat-treatment, as are all high chromium-nickel steels. It is nonmagnetic in the annealed state yet Type 301 becomes slightly magnetic with progressive cold working.
