other properties of the machined part. Some common finishing
options for CNC machined parts include anodizing, powder coating,
bead blasting, and leaving the parts as-machined or as-milled if a
different finish is not required.
Here are more details about two common CNC finishing options:
Anodizing (for aluminum): Anodizing is an electrochemical process
mainly used for aluminum or titanium alloys. The part is submerged
in an electrolytic bath, which thickens the natural oxide layer on
the surface, making it denser, electrically non-conductive, and
more durable. Anodized finishes offer good dimensional control and
are suitable for high-performance engineering applications,
especially for internal cavities and small parts. Anodizing
provides an aesthetically pleasing finish but comes at a higher
price compared to some other finishing methods.
Bead blasting (for metal or plastic): Bead blasting involves using
a pressurized air system to propel millions of glass beads at the
part's surface. This process effectively removes tool marks and
imperfections, creating a consistent grainy, matte, or satin
finish. Unlike powder coating, which adds material to the part,
bead blasting is a reductive finish that removes material from the
part. This is important to consider if your part has strict
tolerances. Bead blasting is a cost-effective finishing option, but
it requires manual execution. The size and grade of the beads used
will also impact the final finish.
