Product Description:
A biogas plant is a type of anaerobic digester which is used to
process farm waste or energy crops. It is built with a air-tight
tank, and can take in energy crops such as maize silage, sewage
sludge, and food waste as fuel.
When the process is underway, micro-organisms will break down the
biomaterial into biogas (carbon dioxide and methane) and digestate.
It has been found that when wastewater is used in combination with
other residuals from the dairy, sugar, or brewery industry, the
production of biogas will increase significantly. For instance,
when 90% of wastewater from beer factory was mixed with 10% cow
whey, it resulted in a 2.5 times increase in biogas production
compared to the biogas produced from brewery wastewater alone.
However, generating biogas from maize plantations has been
criticized as unsustainable and damaging on the environment due to
the extreme concentration, intensity, and soil erosion it leads to.
