An internal combustion engine has a part called a valve guide that
acts as a guide for the valve stem's up-and-down movement. The
purpose of the valve guide, which is often a cylindrical sleeve put
into the engine block or cylinder head, is to support the weight of
the valve and aid in keeping it in proper alignment with the valve
seat.
The valve seat is the area on which the valve closes to seal the
combustion chamber, and the valve guide makes sure that the valve
stays correctly aligned with it. The valve may slide out of
alignment as a result of a worn or damaged valve guide, which may
impact engine performance, decrease fuel efficiency, and raise
emissions.
