Different Methods to Clean Your Makeup Brushes
When it comes to makeup brush cleaning, there are a number of
different ways you can tackle the task. From specialized brush
shampoos and cleansers to DIY mixtures, there is a wide variety of
products and methods to choose from.
1. Use a Brush Cleanser

Begin by dampening your dirty brush in lukewarm water to get the
bristles wet. Make sure you always wet your brushes upside down so

brush cleansers and tools. Thankfully, a number of DIY recipes will
work in a pinch to clean your makeup brushes.
Mild Shampoos:
Using gentle soaps like baby shampoo can effectively remove dirt
and grime from brush bristles. If you're not using a specialized
brush cleaner, just make sure you're paying special attention to
the ingredients listed in your DIY cleanser of choice. Remember
that this brush is going to be all over for your face, so it's wise
to steer clear of anything with parabens, sulfates, or any other
questionable ingredients.
To wash your brush with mild cleansers like these, simply squeeze a
few drops onto the back of your hand, run the makeup brush under
lukewarm water, and swirl it around in the soap, using your fingers
to massage the brush bristles until the water runs clear. Then set
aside to dry completely on a towel.
Dish soap and olive oil:
Another popular home remedy for dirty brushes is to wash them in a
mixture of antibacterial dish soap and olive oil. The dish soap can
kill germs while the oil can effectively break down any built-up
product in the brush. It’s important to use olive oil here as dish
soap alone would be too harsh and could damage your brushes.
It's also worth noting that if you have sensitive skin, you may
want to stick with using a specialized brush cleanser or a mild
shampoo as dish soap often includes more aggressive detergents and
could cause skin irritation for these skin types.
To try this method, mix two parts dish soap with one part olive oil
in a small bowl. Swirl your makeup brush in the soapy mixture,
then, rinse the brush thoroughly under lukewarm water until the
soap and gunk slide away into the sink. Finally, lay it flat on a
towel to dry completely.
