Unlike a two-way valve, a three-way valve usually opens two ports at any time, and which port opens when the coil is de-energized determines the function.

A normally closed (NC) three-way valve will block the path between the inlet and outlet until the coil is energized. When the power is off, the outlet port is connected to the exhaust port. After the coil is energized, the path is blocked, and the inlet and the outlet are connected instead.

Normally open (NO) indicates the valve is open and when the coil is deenergized, the fluid from the inlet to the outlet, and the exhaust port is clogged. When the coil is energized, the intake port closes, opens the flow path from the exhaust port of the exhaust port.

Universal valve may be piped through the NC or NO, may also be used as diverting or select functions, since these valves can accept flow in either direction. Please note that, compared with the equivalent NC or NO valve, which typically reduces the maximum working pressure.
