SURFACE SET CORING BITS
Surface set coring bits are typically used for higher penetration
rates than impregnated bits in softer formations. They utilize a
single layer of natural diamonds set in a hard matrix.
The choice of a Surface Set Bit will be dictated by the rock type.
The diamond size, crown design and matrix hardness used will be
determined by the hardness of the formation. The friability of the
core will determine the type of fluid passages. The surface set bit
provides a greater esure of diamonds than the impregnated bit and
therefore faster penetration in soft formations.
Drilling recommendations
To select a suitable diamond bit for a given situation, basic
information is needed:
* Geology
* Type and size of core barrel
* Flushing media
The final performance with selected bit depends on following
parameters controlled by the operator:
* WOB – weight on bit
* ROP – rate of penetration
* RPM – revolution per minute
* RPI/RPC – revolution per inch/cm
* Flushing
The matrix of our impregnated bits is designed to expose new
diamonds to the bits' cutting face as wear occurs. Fast penetration
rate is maintained as a result of this action.Our impregnated bits
are manufactured to give optimum penetration rates and bit life,
which is required to keep the cost of diamond drilling to a
minimum.The optimum diamond size, concentration and matrix type are
dependent on the hardness and abrasiveness of the formation to be
drilled.
