Description:
Polyvinyl chloride PVC is the world's third-most widely produced
synthetic plastic polymer, after polyethylene and polypropylene.
How does PVC look like?
Pure polyvinyl chloride is a white, brittle solid. It is insoluble
in alcohol but slightly soluble in tetrahydrofuran and has two
different shapes:
1. Rigid :
Used in: construction for pipe, doors and windows, making bottles
(non-food packaging) and cards (such as bank or membership cards).
2. Flexible.
Used in plumbing, electrical cable insulation, imitation leather,
flooring, signage, phonograph records, inflatable products, and
many applications where it replaces rubber. With cotton or linen,
it is used to make canvas.
Applications:
1. Pipes
Roughly half of the world's polyvinyl chloride resin manufactured
annually is used for producing pipes for municipal and industrial
applications
2. Electric cables
PVC is commonly used as the insulation on electrical cables
such as teck. PVC used for this purpose needs to be plasticized.
3. Construction
PVC is a common, strong but lightweight plastic used in
construction. It is made softer and more flexible by the addition
of plasticizers.
4. Clothing and Furniture
PVC fabric is water-resistant, used for its weather-resistant
qualities in coats, skiing equipment, shoes, jackets, aprons, and
sports bags.
