what is 303 Stainless Steel Plate
Alloy 303 is an austenitic, non-magnetic stainless steel that
cannot be heat-treated to become harder. It is a free-machining
variation of fundamental stainless steel that contains 18% chromium
and 8% nickel. It was specifically created for Alloy 303 to have
increased machinability while still having strong mechanical and
corrosion-resistant qualities. Alloy 303 is the most easily
machined austenitic stainless steel because of the sulfur content
in the steel composition; nevertheless, the sulfur addition reduces
Alloy 303's corrosion resistance to below that of Alloy 304. Alloy
303 exhibits great hardness, much like other austenitic grades,
however, the sulfur does somewhat lessen this.
Mild corrosive situations don't affect Alloy 303 negatively.
However, in most applications, the alloy's corrosion resistance
falls short of 304. While 416, another free-machining grade, has
better corrosion resistance, other 400 series stainless steels
without greater sulfur levels have somewhat worse corrosion
resistance. It is advised that Alloy 303 be chemically treated to
eliminate sulfides from the final surfaces in order to achieve the
best corrosion resistance.
