The crystal structure of lead is a cubic lattice. Lead has high
density, low hardness, low melting point, high boiling point, poor
conductivity to electricity and heat, and can absorb radiation, so
it is used to manufacture containers for radioactive substances and
as protective materials.
The metal is very resistant to corrosion, and some lead pipes
installed by the ancient Romans are still intact. Lead is mostly
used in plumbing (although it has now been replaced by plastic).
Lead is also used to shield X-rays, to make munitions, to act as a
jacket for cables, to crystallize glass (as lead oxide), and as an
antiknock agent (such as tetraethyl lead, (C2H5)4Pb). Most lead
salts are insoluble in water, only nitrate (Pb(NO3)2) and acetate
(Pb(CH3COO)
