Vertical Single Axis Slewing Drive Description
Slewing drives use worm gear technology, where a worm on a
horizontal shaft acts as a drive for gears. The rotation of the
horizontal screw rotates the gear about an axis perpendicular to
the axis of the screw. This combination reduces the speed of the
driven component and also increases its torque. As the speed
decreases, it increases by the reduction ratio. The reduction ratio
depends on the relationship between the number of threads on the
worm and the number of teeth in the worm wheel or gear.
As technology advances, more rotary drives are using spherical
enveloping worm technology, where the worm is shaped to mesh with
more teeth in the gear. This increased tooth engagement allows for
greater strength, efficiency and durability of the slewing drive.
