A metal heat treatment process in which metal is slowly heated to a
certain temperature, maintained for a sufficient time, and then
cooled at an appropriate rate (usually slow cooling, sometimes
controlled cooling).
The purpose is to soften the materials or workpieces processed by
casting, forging, rolling, welding or cutting, improve the
plasticity and toughness, homogenize the chemical composition,
remove the residual stress, or obtain the expected physical
properties.
Annealing processes vary with different purposes, such as
recrystallization annealing, isothermal annealing, homogenization
annealing, spheroidization annealing, stress removal annealing,
recrystallization annealing, stabilization annealing, magnetic
field annealing and so on.
