1. What are Electromagnetic Flow Meters?
Electromagnetic flow meters, also called mag meters or magnetic
meters, are volumetric flow meters which do not have any moving
parts to wear, reducing the need for maintenance or replacement.
Accuracy over a wide flow range can be as good as ± 0.5% of flow
rate or better.
They feature an obstruction-free design which eliminates flow
impediment, and operate with electrodes embedded on opposite sides
of the flow tube or sensor to pick up the signal. Mag meters
perform extremely well in many municipal and processing
applications, and have become the meter of choice for measuring
conductive liquids such as water or slurry.
2. Advantages of using Electromagnetic Flow Meters
The main advantages of using magmeters is that they require less
maintenance, and can be ordered for very large line sizes. Some can
be installed with a simple hot tap which does not require shutting
down the line. Mag meters also have the benefit of adding a level
of trust for consumers: they hold the service provider accountable
for the actual water being produced and/or billed. These efforts
will assist with preservation of our water resources while
improving profitability for the utility.
3.What is the operating principle of a magnetic flow meter?
The operation of a magnetic flow meter or mag meter is based upon
Faraday's Law, which states that the voltage induced across any
conductor as it moves at right angles through a magnetic field is
proportional to the velocity of that conductor.
As applied to the design of magnetic flow meters, Faraday’s Law
indicates that signal voltage (E) is dependent on the average
liquid velocity (V) the magnetic field strength (B) and the length
of the conductor (D) (which in this instance is the distance
between the electrodes).
Faraday's Formula
E is proportional to V x B x D where:
E = The voltage generated in a conductor
V = The velocity of the conductor
B = The magnetic field strength
D = The length of the conductor
To apply this principle to flow measurement with a magnetic flow
meter, it is necessary first to state that the fluid being measured
must be electrically conductive for the Faraday principle to apply.
As applied to the design of magnetic flow meters, Faraday's Law
indicates that signal voltage (E) is dependent on the average
liquid velocity (V) the magnetic field strength (B) and the length
of the conductor (D) (which in this instance is the distance
between the electrodes).
In the case of wafer-style magnetic flow meters, a magnetic field
is established throughout the entire cross-section of the flow
tube. If this magnetic field is considered as the measuring element
of the magnetic flow meter, it can be seen that the measuring
element is exposed to the hydraulic conditions throughout the
entire cross-section of the flow meter.
With insertion-style flow meters, the magnetic field radiates
outward from the inserted probe.

5. How to select and install a magnetic flow meter?
The key questions which need to be answered before selecting a
magnetic flow meter are:
- Is the fluid conductive or water based?
- Is the fluid or slurry abrasive?
- Do you require an integral display or remote display?
- Do you require an analog output?
- What is the minimum and maximum flow rate for the flow meter?
- What is the minimum and maximum process pressure?
- What is the minimum and maximum process temperature?
- Is the fluid chemically compatible with the flow meter wetted
parts?
- What is the size of the pipe?
- Is the pipe always full?

7. Maintance
The electromagnetic flowmeter has a self-diagnostic function. In
addition to power supply and hardware circuit failures, the system
also alarms other failures in general use. These messages will give
corresponding prompts in the lower right corner of the screen.
1 Maintenance and repair
a) The sensor installation site should meet the requirements of
Section 4, please keep the housing tidy;
b) The transmitter should be placed in a clean, ventilated and dry
place;
c) It needs to be inspected every two years. For high-precision
users, the instrument needs to be submitted for review.
2 Transportation and storage
a) The instrument must be packaged before transportation, and be
handled with care when loading and unloading.
b) The storage place must be dry and ventilated to avoid corrosive
gases, and the ambient temperature should not be too low or too
high;
c) The storage time should not exceed three years.
