The power frequency spark tester is actually a kind of cable or wire weak point detection instrument. It periodically loads the set voltage value on the insulated wire according to a certain rule, and the conductor part is grounded, thus forming a voltage difference between the conductor and the insulating surface. Therefore, it is possible to detect whether the insulating layer is defective. The tested cable passes through the high voltage pole of the bead chain, and the test voltage is generated by the power frequency high voltage transformer. When there is a defect in the cable insulation, a breakdown occurs, that is, a high-voltage sparkover short circuit occurs in the output of the high-voltage transformer. The short-circuit current forms a loop from the output end of the high-voltage transformer via the electrode-insulation defect, the cable core, and the earth-high-voltage transformer. Therefore, both the spark tester and the wire core must be well grounded, otherwise the short-circuit current will not be able to form a loop, and may result in a dangerously high voltage on the spark tester housing or the cable core.
