SAE5140 / 40Cr is China's standard steel GB, this steel is one of
the most widely used steel manufacturing machinery.
After quenching and tempering has good comprehensive mechanical
properties, good low temperature impact toughness and low notch
sensitivity.
Good hardenability of steel, water quenching can be hardened to Ф28
~ 60mm, oil quenching can be hardened to Ф15 ~ 40mm. In addition to
quenching and tempering of this steel is also suitable for
cyanidation and high-frequency quenching.
Cutting performance is better, when the hardness of 174 ~ 229HB,
the relative cutting of 60%. The steel suitable for making
medium-sized plastic mold.

2, Application:
ASTM5140 is the most commonly used alloy structural steel, tensile
strength, yield strength and hardenability are higher than the 40
steel, but the weldability is limited, there is a tendency to
crack.
ASTM5140 is used for more important quenching and tempering parts,
such as parts under variable load, medium speed and medium load.
3, Properties:
| 1) | 5140 is medium carbon tempered steel, cold heading die steel; |
| 2) | The steel is moderate in price and easy to process. It can obtain a
certain toughness, plasticity and wear resistance after proper heat
treatment; |
| 3) | Normalizing can promote the spheroidization, improve the cutting
performance of hardness less than 160HBS of blank; |
| 4) | The steel has the best comprehensive mechanical properties at the
temperature of 550~570; |
| 5) | The steel is a high degree of quenching, suitable for high
frequency quenching, flame hardening and other surface hardening
treatment. |
4, Heat treatment specification:
Quenching 850 degree, oil cooling;
Tempering at 520 degrees C, water cooling, oil cooling.

1) Medium carbon quenched and tempered steel, cold heading steel.
2) The steel price is moderate, easy processing, after appropriate
heat treatment to obtain a certain degree of toughness, ductility
and wear resistance.
3) Normalizing can promote the organization of the ball, improve
the hardness of less than 160HBS rough cutting performance.
4) Temperatures 550 ~ 570 ℃ for tempering, the steel has the best
overall mechanical properties.
5) The steel hardenability higher than 45 steel, suitable for
high-frequency quenching, flame hardening and other surface
hardening treatment.
