Water heater anode rods replacement
The magnesium anode, in the form of a rod screwed into the domestic
hot water heater, prevents electrochemical corrosion in the heater
and, alongside the enamel layer, is a further form of active
protection for the heater. The use of different installation
materials with different potentials, such as steel, copper and
brass, means that corrosive microcells occur in the electrolytic
water and electrochemical corrosion takes place. The magnesium
anode can equalise the differences in potential between the metals.
When magnesium anodes are mounted in series in enamelled heaters
they deteriorate with time and need to be replenished to prevent
corrosion of the heater itself. The speed at which the anodes
deteriorate cannot be precisely stated and depends, among other
things, on the hardness of the water. For this reason it is
advisable to inspect the anode once a year and to change it if it
is more than two-thirds depleted in relation to its initial volume.
In all instances, though, it should be changed every two years. The
anode must be changed regularly to maintain the validity of the
heater’s guarantee.
