Connection ways of optical fiber (and fiber optic cable): The main methods include permanent connection, emergency connection and removable connection.

1, Permanent optical fiber connection (also called hot melt or splicing fusion), the connection point will be totally melted and connected together by discharge method. Normally used for long distance connections, permanent or semi permanent connections. The main feature is that the connection attenuation is lowest in all connection methods, and the typical value is 0.01~0.03dB/point. But the connection requires special equipment (like fusion splicer machine, cleaver) and professional operation, and the connection point also needs special protective containers, such as heat shrinkable tubes, fiber tray and so on.

2, Emergency connection (also called cold melt or mechanical splicing); emergency connections are mainly fixed and bonded two fibers together by mechanical or chemical methods. The main feature of this method is that the connection is fast and reliable, and the typical attenuation is 0.1~0.3dB/point. But the connection point will be unstable and attenuation will be greatly increased in long-term use, so it is only for short time and emergent use. And it always need to use fast connectors, mechanical splicing protector etc.

3, Removable connection, it is to use different fiber optic connectors, fiber pigtails, fiber patch cords and so on, connecting a site with a site or site to optical cable. This method is flexible, simple, convenient and reliable. It is more widely used in buildings cabling.
