the number designation, the more insulating the material is and
thus, more energy is required to heat the shelf to a given
temperature. It takes considerably more time and energy to heat a
cordierite than a silicon carbide shelf.Once heated, shelves with
lower numbers will have a tendency to hold the heat longer, which
may be an advantage in slowing the cooling of the kiln.
