What is Magnesium Citrate?
Magnesium citrate is an organic salt of magnesium, typically
appearing as a white or colorless crystalline powder, and is
soluble in water. This form gives magnesium good solubility and
high bioavailability in the body, meaning it is easily absorbed and
utilized. It is not only a common source of magnesium in dietary
supplements but also plays a specific role in the pharmaceutical
field.
Feature
Magnesium Supplementation
This is its most basic function. Magnesium is a cofactor for
hundreds of enzymes in the body, participating in key physiological
processes such as energy metabolism, nerve signal transduction,
muscle contraction, and bone health. Magnesium citrate
supplementation can effectively prevent and correct magnesium
deficiency.
As an Osmotic Laxative
This is a significant and potent effect. After oral administration,
magnesium citrate is not easily absorbed in the intestines. It
draws large amounts of water into the intestines through osmosis,
softening stool, increasing stool volume, and stimulating
intestinal peristalsis, thus producing a laxative effect.

Applications

This is its core medical use. Before colonoscopies or certain
abdominal surgeries, doctors use large doses of magnesium citrate
solution to thoroughly cleanse the patient's intestines. It is also
used to treat acute constipation.
Dietary Supplement: Magnesium Supplementation
As a daily dietary supplement, it is used for magnesium deficiency
caused by insufficient dietary intake, magnesium loss due to
specific diseases, or medications. It helps maintain normal nerve
and muscle function, supports heart health, and strengthens bones.
Food Industry
In food production, it is used as an acidity regulator,
preservative, and flavor enhancer, with the E code E345.
