The thermostat hose is a vital component within the automotive
cooling system, connecting the thermostat to other parts. It
directs coolant into the thermostat to regulate the engine's
operating temperature. During cold engine starts, the thermostat
remains closed, directing coolant through the thermostat hose for a
small-loop circulation that rapidly raises engine temperature. Once
the engine reaches operating temperature, the thermostat opens,
allowing coolant to enter the main circulation loop via the
thermostat hose. This coolant then flows through the radiator for
heat dissipation, ensuring the engine maintains an optimal
operating temperature and preventing overheating or excessive
cooling.
- Rapid warm-up: During cold starts, the thermostat remains closed,
confining coolant to the internal engine circuit for swift
temperature elevation.
- Circuit path switching: Upon reaching the set temperature
(typically 82–95°C), the thermostat opens, directing coolant
through the thermostat hose to the radiator for full-system
circulation.
- Preventing Overheating/Overcooling: A deteriorated or ruptured
thermostat hose causes coolant leakage or circulation disruption,
leading to engine overheating (‘boiling over’) or increased fuel
consumption.
Replacement Interval: Inspection recommended every 60,000 km,
replacement at 100,000 km; replace immediately upon detecting leaks
or swelling.
Installation Key Points:
- Operate with engine cold; drain coolant;
- Use elbow clamp pliers to ensure clamp is fully seated;
- After refilling, bleed air via the bleed screw to prevent air
locks causing false high temperatures.
