Application:

These hardened-steel split cotters lock the intake and exhaust valves of 3- and 4-cylinder Perkins 1103/1104 diesels (3.3–4.4 L) into their spring retainers on JCB 3CX back-hoes, MF 1700 tractors and 45 kVA “Vista A” generator sets. They are designed to withstand 30 g valve-train acceleration at 3 000 min⁻¹ without spreading or fretting, guaranteeing 12 000 h of service before overhaul.

Technical specifications:

Overall length 24 mm, stem groove width 2.0 mm, taper 8 ° included angle, material 20CrMnTi case-hardened to 58 HRC with 0.3 mm case depth. Surface is phosphate-coated 3 µm for 96 h corrosion resistance and then lightly oiled for assembly.

Material & performance features:

The 20CrMnTi alloy (0.20 % C, 1.0 % Cr, 0.8 % Mn, 0.04 % Ti) offers 1 100 MPa tensile strength and 12 % elongation, resisting impact fatigue when the cam lifts 9 mm. Controlled taper gives uniform radial load on the valve stem, reducing groove wear to <0.02 mm after 6 000 h.
