    Overview

    Overview & Function

    • The RRU3959 (and RRU3959w) is an outdoor remote radio unit (RRU) used in distributed base station architectures.

    • It handles RF functions: modulation, demodulation, combining/dividing baseband and RF signals.

    • It uses software-defined radio (SDR) techniques, allowing mode configurations (multi-mode, multi-band) via software.

    • It has dual transmitter / dual receiver design to boost output power / capacity.

    • Physical & Interface Ports
      From Table 1-1:

      • RF ports: 2 × DIN connectors (to antenna system)

      • CPRI ports: 2 × DLC connectors (connect to BBU)

      • Power supply port: 1 female connector (tool-less pressfit type) supplying –48 V DC (voltage range –36 V to –57 V)

      • RET port: 1 × DB9 (for Remote Control Unit, RCU)

      • Alarm port: 1 × DB15 (for external alarms)

      Frequency Bands / IBW
      From the frequency spec tables:

      Variant / TypeRX (MHz)TX (MHz)IBW (MHz)
      RRU3959 P900890 – 915935 – 96025
      RRU3959 E900880 – 915925 – 96035
      RRU3959 18001710 – 17851805 – 188045
      RRU3959 21001920 – 19802110 – 217060
      RRU3959w 18001710 – 17851805 – 188075

      Capacity (Single-mode / Multi-mode)

      • In GSM mode (900 / 1800), RRU3959 / 3959w supports up to 8 TRXs.

      • In UMTS (on 900 / 2100) mode:
         • Without MIMO: up to 6 carriers
         • With MIMO: up to 4 carriers

      • In LTE (FDD) mode:
         • RRU3959 (1800 MHz) supports 2 carriers (bandwidth 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 MHz)
         • RRU3959 (2100 MHz) supports 4 carriers (bandwidth 5, 10, 15, 20 MHz)
         • RRU3959w supports 2 LTE carriers (5, 10, 15, 20 MHz)

      • Multi-mode combinations (GSM + UMTS, GSM + LTE, UMTS + LTE, etc.) are supported (within band constraints)

      Receiver Sensitivity
From the sensitivity table (Table 2-4)

      • GSM 900: –113.7 dBm (1-way), –116.5 dBm (2-way), –119.2 dBm (theoretical)

      • GSM 1800: –114.0 dBm (1-way), –116.8 dBm (2-way), –119.5 dBm (theoretical)

      • UMTS 900: –125.8 / –128.6 / –131.3 dBm

      • UMTS 2100: –126.1 / –128.9 / –131.6 dBm

      • LTE (FDD):
         • 900: –106.3 / –109.1 / –111.8 dBm
         • 1800: –106.6 / –109.4 / –112.1 dBm
         • 2100: –106.9 / –109.7 / –112.4 dBm

      Output Power
From various “typical output power” tables, and notes:

      • In GSM mode (900 / 1800), the max per carrier is 60 W (subject to licensing).

      • Under altitude conditions, output is de-rated: at 3,500–4,500 m → –1 dB; at 4,500–6,000 m → –2 dB.

      • For dual LTE carriers, power spectral density (PSD) matching is recommended (i.e. equal power per bandwidth).

      • The “typical” output per carrier depends on mode (GSM, UMTS, LTE) and number of carriers (see tables in the document)

      Power Consumption & Input

      • Input: –48 V DC (–36 V to –57 V)

      • The RRU3959 / RRU3959w supports AC supply via external AC/DC module or OPM15M module.

      • Power consumption typical and maximum values are measured at 25 °C; load variation influences consumption.

      Environmental & Other Specs

      • It is designed for outdoor installation, close to the antennas.

      • Operating temperature, protection, mechanical dimensions, etc. are part of the full spec, but I did not extract all from the sources I reviewed.
