Also called thoracic catheters, these sterile tubes (with multiple drainage holes) are inserted into the pleural space (between parietal/visceral pleura). They address respiratory distress caused by disrupted pleural negative pressure (from air/fluid accumulation) – draining excess air/fluid that the body can’t absorb, as small amounts may be absorbed naturally.
