The automotive alternator serves as the core component of the
vehicle's electrical system, primarily responsible for supplying
power to onboard electrical equipment whilst the engine is running
and for recharging the battery.
The working principle of a car alternator is based on
electromagnetic induction. Simply put, after the engine starts, the
alternator's rotor (which generates a rotating magnetic field) is
rotated by a belt. The magnetic field lines cut through the
windings in the stator, thereby generating alternating current. The
generated alternating current is then converted into direct current
required by the car's electrical equipment and battery through a
rectifier. To ensure that the voltage remains stable under
different engine speeds, a voltage regulator is also equipped.
Fault: Alternato not generating electricity
Common Causes
1. Excitation System Failure:
- Brush wear excessive (thickness ≤ 3mm) or jammed, unable to contact
the rotor collector ring;
- Excitation winding open circuit / short circuit (such as winding
overheating and burning, insulation layer damage);
- Voltage regulator failure (internal electronic components burned
out, unable to control excitation current).
2. Generator Winding Failure:
- Stator three-phase winding open circuit (wire joint loosening) or
short circuit (insulation breakdown between windings);
- Stator core damage (such as core sheet loosening, overheating
deformation, leading to reduced magnetic flux).
3. Mechanical Transmission Failure:
- Generator belt is broken or slipping (unable to drive the rotor
rotation);
- Rotor shaft jammed (severe bearing wear, internal jamming, unable
to rotate).
