Tabs and Notches
Sheet metal parts often require recesses to accommodate screws or
other fasteners. These recesses should be at least the material
thickness wide and extend no more than five times the slot width
into the workpiece.
Similarly, tabs on either side of a notched feature should be at
least 0.126 inches or twice the material thickness (whichever is
greater), and the notch should be no longer than five times the
part thickness.
Holes and Slots
For 0.036-inch materials, these holes and slots should be at least
1/16 inch from the nearest wall or part edge, or 1/8 inch or more
from the edge to other components.
In addition, hole width tolerance is +/- 0.005 inch unless
otherwise noted. Consult the manufacturer if inserts are required,
as additional clearance may be required to ensure a proper fit.
Inserts and Fasteners
Hongsinn has extensive experience using inserts and fasteners in
injection molded parts, and sheet metal is equally applicable.
Panel fasteners and other types of PEM hardware can be used to
support components or provide threads for assembly.
One important point to note is that depending on the type of
plating the part will receive after manufacturing and the material
used, inserts may need to be installed before or after
post-processing operations. Therefore, before pressing the "Accept"
button, be sure to consult with a Hongsinn expert to ensure proper
installation and compatibility.
Finishing the Selection
Hongsinn's plating services include anodizing, zinc plating, and
chromating. We also offer powder coating and screen printing
services, catering to limited stock colors and special color
requests.
From a design perspective, in addition to understanding the
capabilities of each surface finish, it's also important to
consider which processes work with which materials and when to
apply them (be sure to refer to the previous section if you plan to
install hardware). Also, please note that each service incurs an
additional fee, and delivery times may be longer. Ensure you fully
