When can I Replace only the Rubber Portion of an Air Spring?
To replace only the rubber bellows, the following conditions must
be met simultaneously:
Structurally separable: The air spring must be a "repairable" design. This means that its
metal end caps (upper cover and lower piston) are not permanently
bonded to the rubber bellows via a vulcanization process, but are
instead secured with removable mechanical clamps or bolts.
Commonly found in: Original equipment parts for some commercial vehicles (trucks,
buses), trailers, and some older models. These designs are intended
to reduce long-term repair costs.
Rarely found in: Most modern passenger vehicles (sedans, SUVs). To reduce weight,
size, and cost, modern passenger car air springs generally use a
one-shot vulcanization molding process, with the rubber and metal
components being an integral, integral unit.
Metal parts must be intact:
Upper cover: Free of rust and deformation, and the connection to the vehicle
body is intact.
Lower piston: Smooth surface, free of scratches, cracks, or significant wear.
Any defects will wear out the newly replaced rubber airbag during
vehicle operation, leading to premature failure.
Airtight interfaces: The interfaces used for inflation must function properly.
Availability of separate rubber airbag accessories: Customers need
access to separate rubber airbags that precisely match the original
equipment metal components. For most passenger vehicles, the
aftermarket typically only offers complete air spring assemblies
(i.e., the entire air spring assembly), not individual airbags.
Airbag kits are only available for vehicles designed specifically
for repair.
