Main Components of a Crankshaft Position Sensor
Casing: Typically made of high-temperature-resistant,
flame-retardant engineering plastic (such as PBT or PPS).
Connector: A standard automotive electrical connector used to
connect to the vehicle wiring harness.
Magnetic Component: Typically a permanent magnet (such as a
neodymium iron boron magnet).
Sensor Chip: The core component, an integrated circuit (IC) that
integrates a Hall effect element or magnetoresistive element and
signal conditioning circuitry.
Signal Processing Circuit Board: A small PCB that carries the
sensor chip and necessary filtering and protection components.
Cable and Seal: Waterproof and dustproof seals or potting
compounds.
What is the function of the crankshaft sensor?
The crank sensor can be used in combination with a similar camshaft
position sensor to monitor the relationship between the pistons and
valves in the engine, which is particularly important in engines
with variable valve timing. This method is also used to synchronize
a four stroke engine upon starting, allowing the management system
to know when to inject the fuel. It is also commonly used as the
primary source for the measurement of engine speed in revolutions
per minute.
Where is the crankshaft sensor installed?
Common mounting locations include the main crank pulley, the
flywheel, the camshaft or on the crankshaft itself. This sensor is
one of the two most important sensors in modern-day engines,
together with the camshaft position sensor.
