What is Tomato Extract 5%-10% Lycopene?
Lycopene is widely found in tomatoes, tomato products, and fruits such as
watermelon and grapefruit. It is the primary pigment in ripe
tomatoes and a common carotenoid.
It appears as dark red, needle-shaped crystals that are soluble in
chloroform, benzene, and oils but insoluble in water. It is
unstable to light and oxygen and turns brown in the presence of
iron. Its molecular formula is C40H56, with a relative molecular
mass of 536.85. Its molecular structure consists of 11 conjugated
double bonds and 2 unconjugated double bonds, forming a
straight-chain hydrocarbon. It lacks the physiological activity of
vitamin A but possesses strong antioxidant properties.
Its content is high in ripe red fruits, particularly tomatoes,
carrots, watermelon, papaya, and guava. It is used as a pigment in
food processing and is also commonly used as an ingredient in
antioxidant health foods.

Lycopene's singlet oxygen quenching capacity is over twice that of
the commonly used antioxidant beta-carotene and 100 times that of
vitamin E.

plasma cholesterol levels, protect low-density lipoprotein (LDL)
from oxidation, repair and improve oxidized cells, promote
intercellular glial formation, and enhance vascular flexibility.

Lycopene also reduces skin damage from radiation and ultraviolet
(UV) rays.
Immunity Enhancement
Lycopene can activate immune cells, protect phagocytes from their
own oxidative damage, and promote the proliferation of T and B
lymphocytes.

containing lycopene globally.
Cosmetics
GNPD data shows that there are 81 new skincare products and 51
color cosmetics containing lycopene. Typical products include
lycopene moisturizing lotions, which offer whitening and anti-aging
benefits.
Food and Beverages
In the food and beverage sector, lycopene has received "novel food"
approval in Europe and GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status
in the United States, with non-alcoholic beverages being the most
popular.
Applications in Meat Products
Lycopene is the primary component of the red pigment in fruits like
tomatoes. It has strong antioxidant properties and excellent
physiological functions, making it a preservative and colorant in
meat products. Furthermore, the acidity of lycopene-rich tomato
products lowers the pH of meat, inhibiting the growth of spoilage
microorganisms to a certain extent. Therefore, it can be used as a
preservative and freshness-preserving agent in meat products,
partially replacing nitrites.
Applications in Edible Oils
Adding lycopene to edible oils can mitigate oil deterioration.
