Magnesium Metal Description
Magnesium metal has strong reducing properties, releasing hydrogen
when reacting with hot water. When burned, it produces a brilliant
white light. Magnesium does not react with fluoride, hydrofluoric
acid, or chromic acid, nor does it corrode in caustic alkali
solutions, but it readily dissolves in organic and inorganic acids.
Magnesium can directly combine with nitrogen, sulfur, and halogens,
while remaining largely unaffected by hydrocarbons, aldehydes,
alcohols, phenols, amines, fats, and most pharmaceutical oils.

Magnesium Metal Applications
- Used as an emergency fire starter in outdoor recreation due to its
high burning temperature. Also employed in flashlight photography,
flares, pyrotechnics, and fireworks sparklers.
- Used in photoengraving plates for the printing industry.
- Prepared as turnings or ribbons for Grignard reagents in organic
synthesis.
- Added to conventional propellants and used in the production of
nodular graphite in cast iron.
- Serves as a sacrificial (galvanic) anode to protect underground
tanks, pipelines, buried structures, and water heaters.
