There are many different types of CNC machine tools, with approximately a dozen available on the market, but fundamentally, they can be categorized into two main technologies:

Computer Numerical Control Lathe:

A lathe consists of a spindle and toolholder. It works by moving a cutting tool through a cylindrical material, which rotates around the spindle. More complex machines, such as Swiss-type lathes, can process non-cylindrical materials and are typically used to produce products with a consistent design along their long axis.

CNC milling machines

These machines feature a tool spindle and a worktable with a vise to stabilize and secure the material. More automated models often have pneumatic vises and robotic arms to automatically move the workpiece. Manually configured machines require a human operator to perform this work.
