Solar Street Lights: Sustainable Lighting:
The solar-powered street lighting setup is similar to a small realm
of exact cooperation. The fixture acts as the central output part
for illumination, and the light-emitting element is responsible for
transforming electrical power into light energy—such as fluorescent
tubes, sodium lamps, metal halide lamps, and LED light-emitting
components. Fluorescent tubes have a light efficiency of more than
80Lm/W and can last up to 8,000-10,000 hours; high-pressure sodium
lamps have a light efficiency of about 120Lm/W and a service life
of up to 24,000 hours; LED light-emitting components have become
the main choice for solar street lamps because of their high
brightness, long lifespan, and low power usage. Optical parts
control the direction and spread angle of light, mechanical parts
guarantee the fixture's steadiness and toughness, and electrical
parts work together with the light source for stable running.
The solar module serves as the system's "energy gatherer," made up
of solar cells connected in series and parallel, sealed with
toughened glass, EVA, and TPT, and framed with an aluminum alloy.
Just like a hardworking "small sun," it changes solar radiation
into electricity, resists wind and hail, and is simple to set up.
The storage battery acts as an "energy storage device," saving
electrical energy when there is plenty of light and letting it out
when lighting is required, making sure the light source has a
constant power supply at night. Functioning as the system's "smart
center," the solar regulator provides the best charging current and
voltage to the storage battery, stops overcharging and deep
discharging, and prolongs the storage battery's service life. Poles
work closely with the base: the base holds power cables to support
the street lights and keeps the lampposts firmly in place to make
the whole system stand upright.
During the day, under the guidance of the smart regulator, solar
modules take in solar energy, turn it into electricity, and charge
the storage battery pack. At night, the storage battery pack
releases electrical energy to power the light source, allowing it
to give off light—the whole process is automatic and needs little
manual work.
The development of solar street lights has a long history. In 1900,
inventor Clarence Kemp got a patent for the design of the first
solar street lamp, which started its history. In the 1960s,
photovoltaic-powered navigation tools and lighting appeared on
streets, and solar lighting was formally established. In 1973,
countries around the world actively carried out research on
ground-based uses of solar cells, with related projects increasing
a lot. In the 1990s, governments all over the world actively
promoted clean energy, leading to a fast increase in the use of
solar street lights in civilian, commercial, and industrial fields.
Today, with the progress of LED and new battery technologies, solar
street lights are popular in street lighting systems because of
their high energy efficiency, long service life, and low
maintenance requirements. By 2022, their market size had reached
$4.56 billion, and the Asia-Pacific region had become the largest
market.
Solar street lights can be divided in many ways. According to the
energy source, they directly use solar energy—a clean energy;
according to the power supply way, they are self-contained and
don't rely on the traditional power grid; according to the
application, they are widely used in street lighting, park
decoration, industrial building, military places, airports, parking
lots, and other situations; according to the lamp head design,
there are many different shapes.
Their advantages are obvious. In terms of environmental protection
and energy saving, they use solar power to achieve zero carbon
emissions, don't need to consume fossil fuels, reduce the release
of pollutants, and effectively reduce the power grid
load—especially suitable for remote areas or regions with
insufficient grid coverage. Installation and maintenance costs are
low: independent photovoltaic panel power supply means no need for
wiring, which greatly reduces construction difficulty and expenses.
LED light sources have a long lifespan of 5,000-100,000 hours,
while photovoltaic panels and battery packs have a design life of
5-8 years and need little maintenance. They are highly flexible and
adaptable, can work off-grid, and are suitable for mountainous
areas, islands, temporary road construction lighting, and other
scenarios. They also have intelligent control functions such as
light sensing and time control, which can automatically adjust
brightness to fit different environments. In terms of policy and
economy, many countries provide subsidies for renewable energy
projects. Long-term operating costs are lower than those of
traditional street lights, so they are very economical.
