Carbonless paper is coated with two different chemicals: CF or also
known as front coating, and CB or back coating. The chemicals are
held in tiny capsules that are released when the capsules are
broken by pressure from a pen or printer.
When the CF and CB chemicals interact, the CF chemical darkens,
causing the image to appear on the CF side of the paper. An obvious
way to differentiate between CF and CB chemicals is that the image
only appears on the front side of the paper, so there is no image
on the back side of any paper. Since this paper produces an image
without the need for copying, it is called "carbonless paper."
