Description
Ammonium sulfate, commonly known as ammonium sulfate, is an
inorganic salt compound with the chemical formula (NH4)2SO4 and a
molecular weight of 132.14. It is colorless rhombic crystal at room
temperature. Industrial products are generally white or slightly
yellow small crystals, but a few by-products are slightly green,
dark brown and other colors. The relative density is 1.77, the
melting point is 280°C, and it is easily soluble in water. The
aqueous solution is acidic, and the solubility in water decreases
with the increase of ammonia content. Ammonium sulfate is
hygroscopic and solidifies into blocks after absorbing moisture.
The chemical properties reflect the characteristics of ammonium
salts and sulfates. It reacts with alkali to release ammonia gas,
and can be decomposed into ammonia, nitrogen and sulfur dioxide by
heating. It reacts with barium chloride to form barium sulfate
precipitate, and reacts with alkaline potassium mercuric iodide
solution to form brown precipitate.
Main use
In industry: ammonium sulfate is mainly produced by direct reaction
of ammonia with sulfuric acid, or by passing ammonia and carbon
dioxide into a suspension of gypsum powder. Ammonium sulfate
contains about 21% nitrogen and is a quick-acting fertilizer
suitable for general crops. Ammonium sulfate can be used in the
salting-out process in the pharmaceutical field, yeast culture in
fresh yeast production, welding agent, fabric fire retardant,
catalyst for food sauce color, dyeing aid for acid dyes, and
leather deliming agent, etc.
In agriculture: It is an excellent nitrogen fertilizer (commonly
known as fertilizer powder), suitable for general soil and crops,
can make branches and leaves grow vigorously, improve fruit quality
and yield, enhance crop resistance to disasters, and can be used as
base fertilizer, topdressing and seed fertilizer. It can react with
salt to produce ammonium chloride, react with aluminum sulfate to
produce ammonium alum, and make refractory materials with boric
acid. Adding it to electroplating solution can increase
conductivity. It is also a catalyst for food sauce color, a
nitrogen source for culturing yeast in fresh yeast production, and
an auxiliary dye for acid dyes.
In biology: It is mostly used in protein purification processes
because ammonium sulfate is an inert substance and is not easy to
react with other biologically active substances. It can protect
protein activity to the greatest extent during the purification
process. In addition, ammonium sulfate is extremely soluble and can
form a high-salt environment, preparing for protein precipitation
and subsequent high-salt purification.
