What is Closed Suction System ?

The Closed Suction System is intended for removal of secretion in the lower respiratory track in patients receiving prolonged mechanical ventilation. The filter protected system is connected to the artificial airway of the patient ( Endotracheal or Tracheostomy tube) and to the ventilation circuit. It is used over a period of 24 hours,72 hours ( depending on the patient requirement ).

When to Use a Closed Suction System

1. Patients on continuous mechanical ventilation (e.g., in ICUs, post-surgical recovery, or acute respiratory failure).
2. Patients at high risk of hypoxemia (low blood oxygen levels), such as those with ARDS, COPD, or severe pneumonia.
3. Long-term ventilated patients (e.g., >72 hours) to reduce repeated disconnections from the ventilator.
4. Immunocompromised patients or those susceptible to infection (e.g., neutropenic, post-transplant) to lower cross-contamination risks.
5. Pediatric or neonatal patients with fragile respiratory status, where oxygen loss during suctioning could be life-threatening.
