The addition of nickel to copper improves its strength and durability as well as its resistance to corrosion, erosion andcavitation in all natural waters, including seawater and brackish,treated or polluted waters. Copper-nickel alloys also showexcellent resistance to stress-corrosion cracking and corrosionfatigue. The added advantage of resistance to bio-fouling make itan ideal material for application in marine and chemicalenvironments such as ship and boat hulls, desalination plants,heat exchange equipment, seawater and hydraulic pipelines, oilrigs and platforms, fish-farming cages and seawater intakescreens.

The copper-nickel alloys are single-phased throughout the fullrange of compositions and many standard alloys exist within thisrange, usually with small additions of other elements for specialpurposes. The first of these special uses for copper-nickels was asmarine condenser tubes. There are now many others, describedlater. Other copper-nickel alloys are used for coinage and wiremesh for the paper industry, but the two most popular alloys formarine applications are those that contain 10% or 30% nickel.
