Aluminum forms a dendritic structure during the casting process, and the size of the dendrites depends on the solidification rate.Fine columnar crystals are formed when cooling is too fast, and there is usually a layer of columnar crystals near the surface of the ingot in the edge region, and coarse dendrites grow from the crystallizer wall towards the inside of the ingot.Coarse dendrites from the ingot leave streaks on the profile during extrusion.This means that structural differences due to different solidification speeds cannot be completely eliminated in subsequent processing.Therefore, the casting process should take into account the structural homogeneity of the ingot cross-section, and for this reason, hot-top casting and electromagnetic casting have been developed.
