Organic vapor separation membranes are rubbery polymer membranes.
The separation process relies on solubility selectivity, where
differences in the solubility and permeation rates of organic
vapors in the membrane are utilized. Gases with larger molecular
weights and higher boiling points (e.g., ethylene, propylene,
chloromethane, vinyl chloride, butadiene) dissolve more readily and
permeate faster through the membrane. This enables their separation
from gases with smaller molecular weights and lower boiling points
(e.g., H2, N2, CH4).
